Secretary Ken Detzner Voting Update
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=gcMm6_ySHew
Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner says more than 6,000 polling places around the state opened on time this morning and reported few problems. Detzner says his office will be talking with elections supervisors throughout the day to monitor voting.
About 4.5 million Floridians already cast ballots in early voting or with absentee ballots. Detzner says that strong turnout in early voting indicates Florida may post a record turnout in this election of around 9 million ballots cast.
Florida has about 12 million registered voters.
One of those voters was really motivated to cast her vote this morning. Detzner says a woman fell and broke her leg on the way into a polling place, but still managed to vote.
"There was a report in Escambia County of a woman who had fallen in the parking lot and apparently broke her leg in the parking lot and was carried into the polling place by her husband so she could vote and then transported to the hospital. So we're grateful for her interest and passion to vote."
"I don't have any projections to make except that I think we'll have a record-setting year in terms of turnout. Early voting was very enthusiastic by people, as you know, and we're delighted that perhaps even as many as 50 percent of the people might have voted early or in absentee ballots."
The polls will remain open until 7 p.m. Detzner says anyone in line at that time will be allowed to vote.
The Florida Division of Elections will provide the latest election results online at enight.elections.myflorida.com.
