Carlos Muniz, who was named to the Florida Supreme Court in 2019 by Gov. Ron DeSantis, was chosen Wednesday to become chief justice July 1. Justices elected Muniz to succeed Chief Justice Charles Canady, who is finishing his third term in the leadership role. “Our (Supreme) Court’s focus will remain on serving the people of our great state and supporting all the judges and staff who work with us in the judicial branch to administer justice on a daily basis,” Muniz said in a prepared statement. Muniz, 52, held previous positions such as general counsel at the U.S. Department of Education under former Secretary Betsy DeVos, deputy attorney general and chief of staff to former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi and as deputy general counsel in former Gov. Jeb Bush’s administration. Canady, who will remain on the Supreme Court, has served two consecutive terms as chief justice after earlier serving another term. The terms last two years.
